Two Effective Internet Marketing Techniques
Posted by Dan on 2-17-2010
Over the last few months we've been learning a lot about the field of Internet marketing. Now, when I say "learn" I don't mean we're reading Dummies books; far from it actually. We've been working with a couple new companies that are trying to get themselves and their products "out there". We must admit that there's been a couple techniques we thought would be effective (like offering discounts and coupons) but there's a few other techniques that have really stood out to us over the past few months by providing us with real results. Without further adieu, here are two of the latest and most effective techniques we've used with great results. More are coming soon!
Email Marketing
When most people hear the term email marketing, they automatically assume you're talking about spam. As soon as people start thinking about spam, they start thinking products to make certain parts of your life larger, prettier or richer. That's not what we're talking about. There is a way to effectively reach potential customers without shooting out thousands of emails to random folks.
We'll call that method targeted email marketing. What this means is that when you send emails to current and potential customers, they should be about topics that they're actually interested in. What's the most effective way to find out? Ask. When you have a user sign up for newsletters on your website, have checkboxes that tell them to check off the kind of things they're interested in. Then you can send them targeted newsletters and advertisements that they're much more likely to click.
Social Marketing
Another effective technique is one that today simply cannot be ignored. I read somewhere the other day that about 80% of females on Facebook are fans of a brand. Then what are you waiting for!? You should already be out there getting connected with people interested in buying your product. But be careful though, just like in the real world, a lot of advertisements are thrown to Facebook users every single day. So you need to do more than just advertise.
You need to connect. This means posting status and Twitter updates that don't just say "Hey! Have you seen our product?". Very wrong. What you should instead be doing is going for an emmotional connection. Rather than explain how it works, I think a case study is in order. Take a look at one of Dove's Facebook updates:
"12 going on 20. Who were you and what really mattered to you when you were 5, 15 or anywhere in between? How has that influenced who you are today?"
Ask you can see, something like that would provide a reaction (in a female) of "OMGOMG that's just like me!", which I'm guessing is pretty positive.
Conslusion
As you can see, the two above Internet marketing techniques are immensely useful, if done correctly. Just remember that marketing in general is all consumer-oriented. In my Marketing 101 class I learned that marketing is all about giving the customer what he or she wants (well, that's part of it), whether it be a product they may be interested in or something just as simple as an emmotional connection.
